Honestly, she'd been kind of nervous before he came to pick her up. She'd stood in front of the mirror, wondering if she was over-dressed but then she'd remembered what Sam had said.

So she'd leave him up to him, she supposed.

She shouldn't have worried - it's been a lovely evening at the Winchester and now they're sitting waiting for desert and Charlie's probably had more to drink that is really sensible but, God, she's having fun. And that's rare enough that she's not about to question it.

"So," she says, reachin for her glass. "Tell me something about you that I don't know, Sam Merlotte."

She's been looking for Jess since she heard. She's got Cadi with her and the little girl doesn't really know what's going on and there's no way that Charlie can explain it to her. Through years, Shari's been there, through losses and trials and now there's this big void where she ought to be. And she really needs Jess to be there.

She finally finds her, in the cottage. She lets Cadi down and then she stands in the doorway and wonders what the hell she's supposed to say.

She kind of expects tears, but none come. It might just be that it's finally happened - she's finally lost too much. She lasts at home for as long as she can, on her own in the dim light. She puts clothes away, reads a book, tries to work on a painting. She's got all of this nervous energy and nothing to do with it. She hasn't even got Cadi to fuss over - she's spending the night with her grandfathers. And there's just her.

In the end, she can't stand it anymore.

It's really too late to be doing it, but she hopes that he won't mind. She doesn't change, just pulls on a sweatshirt with her pajamas and heads for his front door.
She'll figure out what she's going to say when he opens the door.

Ever since the other day, Ianto's birthday, Charlie's felt like something's changed. She's felt lighter. It's as though she's ready to let something go. She's started on the mural but it's really at early stages yet. What she's doing is sketching out ideas on endless sheets of paper. She'd like Jon's idea about incorporating ideas from home and, at this point, Jon and Sam are in the Hub almost as much as she is. It's only fair that she include them, isn't it? In the middle of the afternoon, the Hub is quiet, pretty much just her and Sam, though other people come and go. She's been aware of how sweet he's been, of the fact that he seems to be taking deliberate care with her. Backing off.

God, he's so sweet. Which is really part of the problem.

"So what should I put in for you, sugar?" she asks, chin leaning in her hand, glasses perched on the end of her nose as she sketches.

She puts it off for a couple of days. There's a roster in place at the Hub - everyone knows when they're supposed to turn up for work and they don't actually need her to be there for the place to run effectively. So she avoids it, stays at home with Cadi and Charlie feels like she's trying to make up for the days that she forgot Cadi entirely. Forgot Ianto.

But there's only so long she can put it off.

She's spent most of the day working on art in the studio, building up to it. There's a part of her that really hopes that Sam isn't home but she shakes that out. She's braver than that.

She combs her fingers through her long hair and then she knocks on his door.

When it happens, it happens all of the sudden. She's scrubbing the bar and when she looks up, she knows that she's in the wrong place completely. Last thing she remembers, she was setting up her station at the Burnt Toast diner, and now here she is. There's a little girl playing on the floor and a wedding ring on her finger and, somewhere in the back, there's delta blues playing.

Charlie Andrews does what most people would.
She drops the cloth in her hand and she screams.

According to the rota that's hanging behind the bar, it's Jon that she's waiting on. Not that he's late or anything, but, more and more, Charlie finds that she's coming to depend on the boys she's got working for her. She just feels better when one of them's in the building.

Cadi's at the children's office for the morning, which means Charlie's got her hands free to do a proper clean of the bar before she opens. She's got her hair wrapped up and her iPod's hooked up and playing music that'd be good for dancing.

She's in a good mood today.
Long may it last.

It's comforting to know that she has so many people that she can rely on. She's got people she can leave Cadi with, if she needs to. Jon's at the Hub with Sam taking over later. She's got friends. She's looked after. And, somehow, she's managing to get through her life, one step at a time. Today, she's in her office at the school, doing start of term paperwork with the door open to the breeze and her glasses on the end of her nose.

It's times like these that she can almost forget that there's anything wrong at all.

It isn't until later that she starts mulling it over. So what if she'd been sitting there looking like hell when she met Sam; why should it even matter? For a moment there, she forgot who she was. She forgot that she was Charlie Jones, that her little girl was playing on the floor and that her father, Cadi's father, was probably never coming back. Even though she still had wedding rings on, she'd consciously thought shit because there she was without make up when a handsome guy walked into her bar.

And realising that? It makes her feel like hell.

She ends up in the Hidden Hamlet, cross-legged on the grass with Cadi charging around, chasing Banon. Charlie does something that she hasn't done in a long, long time. She bends over her lap and she folds paper cranes.

The quiet days are difficult because they're both easy and hard. They're easy because she doesn't have to put a face on - she can cry a little, if she needs to but she can also realise that she's been happy for hours, without guilt.

And that's the part that's hard.

It's too early, really, for anyone to be hanging out in the bar, but Charlie's in there, with Cadi playing on the floor. She's got a book open, her hair scraped back and and up and her reading glasses on the end of her nose. She's got a t-shirt on that she's pretty sure is one of Ianto's.

Reaching for her tea cup, she flips the page.

The doors are closed and locked and it's just the two of them, a bowl of soapy water ont he bar. Charlie's stopped before cleaning, sat down on a stool with her shoes kicked off and her chin cradled in her hand. She's pulled the pins out of her hair and it's tumbled around her face. Cadi's with Geoffrey so she knows that she can relax. She arches an eyebrow.

"Okay, let's start easy," she says. "Screwdriver, please."

They both wrapped up as well as can be. For this occasion, Charlie's decided to wear pants. Her boots are fur-lined, as is the hat that's pulled down over red hair. Cadi's just about trussed up so tight that she has to waddle when she walks away from her Momma. Cheeks are flushed red, but they're having a grand time. Soon, they'll go home to Ianto and try to get warmed up again, but, for now, they're trying to build a snow-man.

It's not really going to plan.

"Uh-oh, baby," says Charlie, laughing. "I think he's going to topple."
